Now that the recommendation system for reddit works, we can start investigating the potential uses and side-effects of it.
And I think I've just found one: it's an incentive to pay more attention to voting.
Collaborative filtering services such as digg and reddit have long been criticized because
nothing forces people to vote well: in fact, many people exert herd behavior.
User clustering changes that: since I'm going to be clustered with users who
have the same tastes, I might as well try to be clustered with the smart ones,
to get the best out of collaborative filtering. But if I want that to happen,
I'd better vote smartly. I am thus compelled to think twice before voting.
So, in conclusion, if most people start using the recommendation system, the
overall quality of stories on reddit should increase dramatically. Pretty nice
isn't it?
