A business model for reddit?
It's been said many times that reddit lacks a business model. I think I have an idea that could be an interesting solution, or at least a good source of side-revenue.
Business on the Internet is mostly about advertising. However, with the help of firefox and the famous adblock extension, the average reddit user almost never gets to see an ad. It's my case at least, and it has lead me to an unexpected conclusion: I kind of miss them.
Why? Because as much as I hated animated popups and the like, it was useful to be informed once in a while of useful commercial services. Hence my idea: voluntary ad exposure.
Reddit knows me pretty well: it would be pretty easy for them to generate a list of highly relevant ads. Well, I would be willing to look at them, provided the following conditions are met:
* Ads are relevant, correct and sober.
* I can choose between looking at ads and normal content.
In order to enforce rule number one, users could vote for ads they like. Ads that would be downvoted would be removed from the system, and after a certain number of bad ads, the provider would be banned from the system.
So that's my business model for reddit: relevant, voluntary ads. Would you agree to watch them?
